I-29 Southbound Interchanges Open Near Singing Hills In Sioux City

Posted:
SIOUX CITY, IA -

Over the past few years it seems like there have been more and more detours to go along with all the road construction along I-29 in Sioux City.

You can add a new detour to all of that, it's along Highway 20 and I-29, and it started Thursday morning.

It's been a headache for years now.

Drivers have been dealing with a lot roadwork and traffic along I-29 in Sioux City.

Starting August 9th, folks heading south onto the interstate from Highway 20 will be see another detour.

When you hear about lane changes and detours, you probably think congestion and delays, but this might actually take away from your traffic troubles.

"We feel that it is maybe going to operate a little bit better than what we've had before," said Dean Herbst, a Resident Construction Engineer with the Iowa DOT.

If you're heading East on Highway 20 in Nebraska you'll be able to use the interstate exit ramp to go south on I-29, instead of going north through South Sioux City.

Before joining up with interstate traffic, drivers will have to head through the Singing Hills intersection, a detour that has some worried.

"Last year was hectic, this year has been wild," said Tom Schoening, Marketing Manager with the Midwest Peterbilt Group.

The Peterbilt shop along Singing Hills has been in the middle of construction zones for the past two years.

If you thought traffic was bad, try driving an 18-wheeler.

"In this bumper to bumper bottleneck it has been during this construction season has been very frustrating for some of the trucking customers that we serve," said Schoening.

Even if this newest detour causes a headache or two, it won't be for long.

The southbound bridge over Singing Hills should be open by the end of September.

Speaking of detours, the I-29 Southbound interchange from Highway 20 heading west should be opened up by next Monday.
