SIOUX CITY, IA -
It's been going on around the
country for 29 years now: National Night Out, and Sioux City's
participated each of the last 20 years. It's an event that brings the
community and law enforcement together.
Riverside Lutheran Church hosted one of four
different National Night Out events happening in Sioux City. Police say
it's a good way to get to know your neighbors and local law
enforcement.
"We
know from studies and statistics, that the more a person is involved in
their neighborhood, the more likely they are to pay attention to what's
going on in their neighborhood and call if they see something out of
the ordinary. It's a way to build friendships and partnerships and
minimize whatever crimes we can," Officer Chad Sheehan said.
The event isn't just about getting to know
your neighbors, it's about having fun with them as well. That's because
there were picnic tables full of food and several games to keep kids
busy.
"They like the water game, they love that game," said Teresa Schroder, who attended the event.
Schroder's been bringing her kids for about five years.
"We
get to see people that maybe we don't get to people we see everyday,
and we get to visit and its really good time," she said.
If you couldn't make it out to the event, you
can turn on your porch lights, go outside, and chat with your nearby
neighbors. That's just another way of showing your community support
today.
