Is Siouxland Scared After Colorado Theater Shooting?

Posted:
SIOUX CITY, IA -

After the theater shooting in Aurora, Colorado during in the early morning hours of July 20th, KMEG 14 wanted to talk to Siouxland to see how the tragedy is affecting lives here.

Some folks are scared because of what happened, saying it might be hard to go to the movies after the shooting.

Amanda Grant said, "You really never know what people are capable of. I will probably think of this every time I go to a movie theatre or perhaps I refrain from going to one for awhile just because of this."

Charles Petersen said, "I stay home and away from large crowds 'cause you just never know who's out there!"

Lt. Rex Mueller, SWAT Commander for the Sioux City Police Department, says people shouldn't be worried.

The city's patrol officers and SWAT team constantly train for situations like the Aurora shooting and there's no need to live in fear.

"Things like this are probably about as frequent as lightning striking and killing somebody," said Lt. Mueller. "It's one of those things that you cannot live your life and worry about."

Several people around Sioux City agree, saying the movie theater will still feel like a safe place and the shooting won't stop them from seeing "The Dark Knight Rises."

"It's never been a consideration of mine that it would be unsafe," said Susan Linderborg, originally from Chicago. "I would hope that it's only an isolated incident and that there's not that kind of people everywhere in the world."

"I went last night and I thought it was a very good movie and it's worth seeing again," said Eric Graack, from Sioux City. "And hopefully here in Sioux City, I feel like it's a pretty safe town, something like this wouldn't happen here."

"I wanted to see it before it happened though," said Raul Zerzuche, of Sioux City. "There's probably going to be more security now that that happened."

Conor Davis said, "I hope people continue to see movies and that this event will not cause people to live in fear."

Lt. Mueller also says it's important to be aware of your surroundings wherever you are and always report suspicious activity to the police.
