DAKOTA CITY, NE -
(DAKOTA CITY, NE) - Local garden growers gave Siouxlanders the chance Friday to pick straight from the garden for free.
"Of The Earth" grows and sells well more than 20 varieties of USDA Certified Organic produce in Dakota City, Nebraska. Owners Pete and Susan decided to invite the public this morning to come out to tour their garden and to grab a pair of scissors and snip what they wanted to eat straight from the ground for no cost.
Those owners said they wanted to give the community an educational experience.
"In this day of city living and indoor living and video games and that kind of stuff, a lot of people just don't know where their food comes from anymore. And so to have people come out and just touch it and dig in the dirt, that's, that's something we really value," said Susan Linderborg.
"It's the ability to put my love into something and have that love shine for others. That's really the way we look at it. This is a large, closed circle project. Everything we put into it comes out," said Peter Andersen.
Both Peter and Susan are riding in RAGBRAI Sunday, July 23, and wanted to give away most of their produce before it went bad. They said they would love to host another garden tour and free picking again when their tomatoes are ripe.
You can find "Of The Earth" produce at the Sioux City Farmers Market on Saturdays. Go to www.ofthearth.org for more information.
