SIOUX CITY, IA -
When Bernie and Tristan found out that their mom had cancer and couldn't pay her medical bills, they decided they needed to do something. So, they opened a lemonade stand.
Tisha Dumkrieger was diagnosed in March with a rare combination of papillary and follicular carcinoma. A diagnosis Tisha didn't expect.
"Right away, I was just like, not me, but I think for me it was more like, why now," Tisha said.
She had a full time job and was enrolled in school. But all that stopped when she got the news, and that wasn't even the worst of it.
"My insurance maxed, about a month before I even had radiation. And so, the radiation, doctors visits, my full body scan, all of that is completely out of pocket," she said.
That's when her two kids stepped in.
"It was Bernie who came up to him and said, can I sell my swingset, would that help? And he said, you don't need to do that," she said.
So instead, they decided to sell lemonade.
"It's easier, and its more funner, and you get to have fun, and help people, if they're really hot," they said.
And of course, to help their mom, because they love her.
"A lot. This much," they said.
Bernie and Tristan will be at their stand tomorrow from 12-4, and you name your price for the lemonade because any donation will do.
Tisha had surgery a few months ago, and we're happy to say, she's in remission right now, cancer free.
The Lemonade stand will be held July 14th, at 33rd street and Jackson, in Sioux City, IA.
