No Green Thumb? You Can Still Help Sioux City Community Garden Grow

Posted:
SIOUX CITY, IA -

You don't often find a garden in the middle of a city, but that's exactly where the St. Thomas Episcopal Church Community Garden has been going green for two years.

Inside you'll find everything from flowers to asparagus, and now that garden needs your help to grow.

"When we were building these beds a guy walked by and wanted to know, he thought we were creating a graveyard," said Rev. Torey Lightcap of the St. Thomas Episcopal Church in Sioux City. "No, it's about the furthest thing from a graveyard that you could have."

Since 2010 the St. Thomas Episcopal Community Garden off Douglas Street in Sioux City has been growing in a quarter acre lot, and the volunteers who pull the weeds and tend to the crops there aren't doing it just for fun.

"The majority of it goes in to the food pantry," said Rev. Lightcap.

After two years the community garden's asking the community for some help and it couldn't be easier, you don't even have to get your hands dirty.

"We really want to be able to build a greenhouse," said Rev. Lightcap.

To help build that greenhouse you'll have to go online.

The garden's the only one in Iowa trying to win a community garden grant from DeLoach Vineyards, a total of $4,000.

That money would help grow food for the pantry all year round, just another way to help volunteers give back to the community.

"We're also helping to beautify the neighborhood, we're helping to stabilize the neighborhood, a sense of peace the people have," said Rev. Lightcap. "The people drive by here and they know we're going to be here for a long time."

It's a green spot in the middle of downtown and it's asking Siouxland to help it grow.

The grand prize is actually $20,000 which will be handed out to the top five gardens in the contest.

Voting goes until August 6th, so if you'd like to help St. Thomas out, you can vote here: http://www.deloachcommunitygardens.com
