Heroin Seized In Storm Lake Likely From Chicago

STORM LAKE, IA -

A major drug bust in Storm Lake, Iowa ends in arrests.

Police searched homes, seized drugs and the investigation isn't over yet.

Sunday night Storm Lake Police arrested Demetrius Staten and Michael Mosley, both of Storm Lake.

Two drug busts Police believe could be connected to a larger problem: drugs funneling in from the windy city.

"We've seen an increase in, an upswing, up tick, in heroin seizures and heroin use in and around Storm Lake for about the last 18 months," said Storm Lake Police Chief Mark Prosser.

Storm Lake Police saw that up tick once again Sunday night, June 24th, following several drug busts and the seizure of heroin.

"We believe heroin is being brought into the city from Chicago," said Prosser.

During two separate traffic stops Sunday night Police seized heroin from Staten and marijuana from Mosley.

Later, at around 6:30 PM, Storm Lake Police executed a search warrant at an apartment on West 9th street.

Inside they found heroin, methadone and items used to cut heroin for street sale.

An hour and a half later, at around 8:00 PM, Police found drug paraphernalia and some cash they believe to be from drug sales, while serving a search warrant at an apartment on Park Street.

Finally, at around 10:00 PM Sunday night while searching a house on Kenzy Street, Police found marijuana and more drug paraphernalia.

Chief Prosser says finding marijuana isn't all that uncommon, but heroin use is growing.

"It's not a drug that, for many years, we saw at all in Storm Lake," said Prosser. "Marijuana, methamphetamine, cocaine we've dealt with on and off for many, many years, but for the last two and a half to three years we've started to see small amounts of heroin starting to creep into the community."

The case is still under investigation.

Police couldn't say how much heroin was seized, but Chief Prosser said more arrests and charges are expected in this case.
