Hometown Farmer: Trio Tackles Turkey and More

(KIRON, IA) - Brad Lundell and his brother Brian grew up on the farm, but Brian didn't start working there full time until a few months ago.

The brothers and their dad run a corn and soybean farm in Kiron, Iowa called Cozy Valley Farms. They also raise hogs and even turkeys for a local company.

"It's a great sense of pride and tradition that we can keep our operation growing," said Brad Lundell.

He owns and operates four turkey barns each 50 feet wide by 650 feet long with a total of 40,000 turkeys. Brad decided to tackle the turkey business four years ago.

"Local company was looking for more contract growers for turkeys and we fit within their geographical area and the land was right to build barns," said Lundell.

Brad raises his turkeys until they are about 20 weeks old. Then, he lets them go to market. It's not just turkeys on this farm. The Lundell's have hogs, grow soybeans and corn and even tinker with tractors in the wintertime as a sort of hobby.

Brad's younger brother, Brian, joined him just this spring.

"I've always been the one to tag along and now it's a little bit different because we're a little bit more on the same level, but he does have a lot more years of experience and a lot more knowledge. So that's been fun," said Brian Lundell.

Then there's Grandpa Jim Lundell. He's watched his kids grow up and now both his boys run the farm with him.

"When there's a good relationship with family, it's a great fit to work with them and we've been real happy so far," said Brad.

"I've taught Brad a few tricks, but he's still teaching me a lot, too," said Brian.

"You could almost say it's kind of a father's dream to have his son or sons continue on and both my boys show a lot of interest in the farming," said Jim Lundell.

Jim said he's gonna stick around the farm as long as he can. He'll have his old fashioned planting book while his boys tackle new tractor technology this fall.
