SIOUX CITY, IA -
An update on a story we have been following on a deadly home invasion. We now know James Kroll, the suspect in this case, once lived with the family. A source close to the investigation tells us Kroll and his girlfriend Emily Tope, the daughter of the female victim, were charged with marijuana possession with intent to deliver back in 2010.
He was later kicked out of their home.
We now know who the victims are one day after a deadly home invasion in Sioux City, as the man who beat the victim to death with a crowbar is charged with first degree murder.
James Kroll is being held on $1 million bond after Police say he broke into a home, killed a man, and sent a woman to the hospital.
It happened at this house on 39th Street Place just off Hamilton in Sioux City, at right around 3:00 AM Wednesday morning.
One man, 54-year-old Jeffrey Moravek, was killed after he was hit in the head twice with a crow bar while he was sleeping.
The man police believe killed him, 23-year-old James D. Kroll, is charged with first degree murder, attempted murder, and first degree burglary.
He was arrested Wednesday morning after police convinced him to turn himself in.
Police believe he went into the house through, quote: "an unsecure window after observing the residence and watching the victim for several hours."
While he was inside Police believe Kroll also hit 54-year-old Mary Tope with that crow bar, twice in the head while she was sleeping.
She was sent to Mercy Medical Center in Sioux City.
After the attacks police believe Kroll, quote: "remained inside and around the residence for several more minutes prior to fleeing the scene and prevented help from being called for the victim."
Investigators say there was another woman at the house when the attack happened.
Police think Kroll knew the victims, but they aren't telling us what his relationship to them was.
Mary Tope is still at Mercy Medical Center, her family isn't releasing her condition.
