Splash! Kids Hope To Break Swimming Lesson Record In South Sioux City

Posted:
SOUTH SIOUX CITY, NE -

Thursday kids in South Sioux City tried to break a record by taking a swim.

Nearly 100 kids made a splash at the YMCA, part of an attempt to break the Guinness World Record for the world's largest swimming lesson.

In all, 500 sites, in 24 countries around the world, took part.

But this swim wasn't just about fun, organizers hope the lesson helps save a life.

"Drowning is the number two unintentional cause of death for kids between the ages of 1 and 14," said Chris DeRoin, Marketing Coordinator for the Norm Waitt Sr. YMCA in South Sioux City. "And obviously if in your backyard pool, or your neighborhood pool, or out in the lake swimming, it is definitely a tragedy but we're trying to make it preventable."

The previous swimming lesson record was set a year ago, with around 20,000 swimmers.

But did those kids break that record? An official announcement should come by Monday, June 18th.
