SIOUX CITY, IA -
It's been a year and a half since a man died after a fight outside a bar on Historic Fourth Street, and Wednesday, June 13th, the second trial of Bradley Gregg started in Sioux City.
Last September a jury couldn't reach a verdict.
Gregg is charged with involuntary manslaughter and assault without intent causing serious injury.
Police say he punched Joseph McDonald in the face, McDonald hit his head on the sidewalk and died.
Wednesday, prosecutors and defense lawyers made their opening statements, revisiting that night in October 2010.
To start the day the prosecution was trying to convince the jury Gregg was harassing McDonald's wife, and he that caused the fight.
The defense explained both McDonald and Gregg were being aggressive.
When McDonald's wife took the stand Wednesday morning she told the jury what she saw that night.
"So what happens next?" asked prosecuting Attorney James Loomis.
"He gets in between me and the defendant and the next thing I know he's like face to face with the defendant, and he gets punched twice in the face and he hits the ground really hard," said Tasha Reddig McDonald. "He doesn't try to catch himself, he doesn't try to do anything."
The defense tried to cast doubt on Gregg's aggression, saying he was just trying to get away from the situation.
"The question is, did you think by running at him, that would make him stop it?" asked defense lawyer Michael Williams.
"No, I reacted badly too," said Reddig McDonald.
The Woodbury County Medical Examiner, Dr. Thomas Carroll, testified as well, saying after the fight McDonald had a number of fractures and contusions.
"In your opinion, did those fractures contribute to Mr. McDonald's death?" asked Loomis.
"Yes," said Dr. Carroll.
One of the main questions the defense raised to close out the day: was it Gregg's punches or McDonald's fall to the concrete that ultimately caused his death?
"I think the most significant injury was the fall in which he hit the back of his head," said Carroll. "Which caused a significant amount of head injury."
The trial ended for the day at around 3:45 Wednesday.
The case is set to continue Thursday morning at 9:00 AM.
