SIOUX CITY, IA -
Each of the flags in Memorial Park represents a fallen soldier in the U.S. Armed Forces. And hundreds of people came out today to honor their loved ones.
Loved ones, neighbors, and strangers all gathered to honor those who died for their country, even those who served alongside them.
"It was great when my friends were around, but when they died, you feel like part of you is gone," said Robert Hobbs, a Vietnam veteran.
Many of them come every year to Memorial Park Cemetery to remember and connect with the spirits of those lost.
"I feel like they know I'm here. That's what gets me through this, is knowing that, I have a feeling they know I'm here," Delores Sturgeon, the wife of a veteran.
And keeping the tradition alive means their sacrifices will never be forgotten.
"Years ago, this is what you did. Everybody had a program, you honored your deceased members, and there were parades and things," said Ken Berkey, American Legion Woodbury County Commander.
This was a more somber ceremony, but with music and memories filling the air, this day will hold a place in their hearts.
People we spoke with said now that they have attended the memorial they're going to go home and they're going to celebrate by having a BBQ or just enjoying this beautiful day in Sioux City.
