Siouxland Cops Support Special Olympics

SIOUX CITY, IA -

Volunteers from the Sioux City Police Department are taking off the badge and putting on an apron for the Special Olympics.

Area law enforcement officers took time off from duty to serve lunch at Texas Roadhouse today.

Customers paid for their meal with donations, with all the proceeds going to Special Olympic athletes in Iowa.

It's an event that volunteers say benefits them as much as the participants.

"They work together to bring about such a wonderful event like we have today to raise money for people with special needs so they can be involved in something that good spirits, makes them feel good inside. Makes them feel like for a little bit of time like they are equal to everyone else," said Shawn Donnelly, a father of a Special Olympian.

"Seeing them competing in their specific sports. There's 23 Olympic style sports that they can compete in and they receive training and money to actually go to the events... and to see them do that is a really great thing," said SCPD Officer Kelcey Stubbe.

All proceeds from today's event will provide year round training and competitions for Iowans with intellectual disabilities.
