SIOUX CITY, IA -
Dr. Jill Biden, Second Lady and wife of Vice President Joe Biden, held her first campaign conference call with Iowans today. Supporters and volunteers gathered at house parties and campaign offices around the state to join in on the call. Although the conference call was quick, Dr. Biden's main message was the critical role women will play in this next election.
She spoke about issues ranging from health care to women's rights. She started the Women for Obama Steering Committee, and women right here in Sioux City are already jumping on board, rallying in Obama's favor.
And so it begins, the 2012 presidential election is just months away, and both the Democratic and Republican Parties are gearing up. Presumptive Republican nominee Mitt Romney was in Des Moines Tuesday, and Dr. Biden spoke with supporters all over Iowa Wednesday. They all seem to share one common goal: winning over the swing state.
"I think Iowa is going to be crucial and there are some scenarios in which it could come down to Iowa," said Linda Smoley, an Obama supporter.
"Last time, 4 years ago, or 3 and a half years ago, Obama won Iowa, we don't think that that's going to happen this time, but we need to work hard. Iowans will definitely need to be engaged," said Brian Rosener, Woodbury County Republican Party Chairman.
And although both parties can agree on that, they don't see eye to eye when it comes to the candidates.
"Most of us are very fearful for our state, our nation because of the direction he's taken it. Certainly unemployment, endorsing same sex marriage, things that Iowans want to see changed and go in a different direction. So I think Romney will have a great deal of support," Rosener said.
"Their stated goal from day one of his administration was to do nothing but defeat and they have indeed done nothing... you know, that have so hurt our nation and they have told so many lies about this president and he stands for and how much he cares," Smoley said.
But no matter how the campaign plays out come November, voters will have the last word when they head to polls.
