Kerrey Vs. Fischer: Former Nebraska Governor Stumps In SSC

SOUTH SIOUX CITY, NE -

After Tuesday's Primary the race for Nebraska's seat in the U.S. Senate is set: Fischer vs. Kerrey.

After winning Tuesday night's democratic primary with more than 80% of the vote former Governor and Senator Bob Kerrey made a stop in South Sioux City Wednesday.

Whether you're Republican, Democrat, or somewhere in the middle, both Bob Kerrey and Deb Fischer say the election will boil down to what you think Nebraska's values really are.

Bob Kerrey made a stop in South Sioux City Wednesday.

The talk quickly turned to his opponent, Deb Fischer, and something he says is ruining the political process.

"She won because of outside money," said Kerrey.

Fischer came from behind to win the state's Republican Primary, helped by a late endorsement from Sarah Palin and negative ads against her opponents, paid for by political action committees.

"I think it's distorting our political process and making it difficult for the candidates themselves to carry their message to the people," said Kerrey.

Both candidates say the race for the senate won't be about them.

"I think it is much more likely to be an issue oriented campaign," said Kerrey.

"That's what this race will be about, who will put Nebraska first?" said Deb Fischer at a press conference Wednesday morning.

Kerrey admits he's the underdog in the race, but he says moving back to the state and running for office after a decade away won't matter with Nebraska voters.

"This idea that you leave the state for 10 years for a job and then you come back to it, that that somehow disqualifies you for office, that is not something that connects to the values of our state," said Kerrey.

Kerrey says his record of cooperation across the aisle will be a big plus in November.

"I think I can persuade Republicans that particularly, I understand small business, because that's what I came from," said Kerrey.

But Fischer says that cooperation isn't enough.

"I have a good, strong conservative record, it represents Nebraskans," said Fischer. "Mr. Kerrey's record is not a conservative record, it's a liberal record and I think that is what Nebraskans are going to be looking at, they're going to be contrasting those records that we have, and they'll make their decision."

One of the big questions with Kerrey so far has been whether or not he is living in Nebraska.

He says he is, right now he's renting a place in Omaha.

He says win or lose come November he will have a home in Nebraska.
