Post Offices Saved; Norfolk Processing Center Still Set For Closure

Posted:
NORFOLK, NE -

Thousands of post offices have been saved from closure, but one Siouxland postal processing Center is still on the chopping block.

A Postal Service Spokesman says Norfolk's Postal Processing Center is still on the list of centers to be closed.

This comes after several announcements from the USPS, deciding against closing urban post offices, and similar news last week to cut back hours at thousands of rural post offices instead of closing them completely.

The Norfolk plant's closure is part of an effort to save money.

"We project to lose $14 billion dollars this year, so business as usual is not an option for the postal service," said Brian Sperry, a USPS Spokesperson. "We don't receive taxpayer dollars so we absolutely have to go in and reduce our costs to match the declining workload."

It's not know yet when the plant will close, an announcement should come later this week.
