Spencer Celebrates Being Named a Blue Zone

SPENCER, IA -

Organizers of the Blue Zones effort in Spencer are celebrating today's announcement that the city has been named one of four cities in Iowa that will receive state help to promote healthier living within the community over the next two years.

The city's campaign started with just two organizers, and became a city wide effort.

To wow the committee, they wrote a song about the community and even had a flash mob at the mall as part of their campaign.

"Spencer has always stood up to the challenge, whatever it might be, and this was no exception where, again, you didn't have to ask, people just showed up and helped support it in any and every way," said Bill Campbell with the Spencer Chamber of Commerce.

The Spencer Blue Zones project also has a Facebook page where they post the 'Nudge of the Week', which is a helpful reminder to help nudge people toward better living.

The other three cities joining Spencer in the inaugural group of Blue Zone cities are Cedar Falls, Mason City, and Waterloo.  Sioux City was one of 11 finalists in the running for the honor, but was not chosen.

Officials say six more cities will be named Blue Zones next year.
