(SIOUX CITY, IA) It's time to pay your taxes, and filing them may be a scary thought for some. That's why the Center for Siouxland is here to help.
"We do free taxes for virtually anyone, we like to keep it to low income people, who really can't afford the 100 or 200 dollars to do their tax return. Generally we would say people who have an income less than 50,000 dollars," said Linda Cohen, a volunteer at Center For Siouxland.
Cohen says you should bring certain documents, to get in and out quickly.
"Well, the first thing you want to do is have a picture I. D. because we have to make sure that we know that you are who you think you are. And then you have to have your social security card, so we can verify that you are the right person. And it works really great if you bring last years tax return in, but that's not a an absolute requirement," she said.
You will also need your W2 forms and any other income paperwork like home mortgage documents and real estate tax information. She says it's also helpful to bring in your bank account information, so the IRS can refund money straight into your bank account to help the government go green.
"Any money that we can save the IRS means it's money in our pockets because we pay the IRS' bills," Cohen said.
Many restaurants are offering incentives to get your taxes paid on time; Chili's is one of them.
"We're doing this to kinda give everyone a break from the taxes, and it's kinda a stressful time of year with tax season," said Fred Sulzbach, manager at Chili's.
Chili's is offering a free appetizer or dessert until Wednesday with the purchase of one adult meal and is limited to one per table with a coupon. The coupon can be found on Chili's website. Elsewhere in Siouxland, Cinnabon is offering two free cinnamon roll bites from 6 to 8 PM on Tuesday, and Arby's is offering a free value-sized order of curly fries with a coupon available on their website.
