USD to Brighten Smiles in South Dakota Schools

(VERMILLION, SD) A Siouxland program is getting federal help to build brighter and healthier smiles.

The University of South Dakota's Dental Hygiene program has been granted $145,000 from the Department of Health and Human Services.

USD will work with school districts in Union and Clay Counties to provide care at their schools with portable dental equipment.

"There are children that may not have any insurance for dental care, or access for or have dental problems that we would like to try and identify, and we'd be able to help them with sealants, fluoride varnish, doing some screenings and then be able to refer them to a dentist to get further care," said Ann Brunick, Chair of the USD Department of Dental Hygiene

The Rural Health Care Services Outreach Grant qualifies USD to receive additional money over the next two years.
