Winning Favor: Championships on Film

(ORANGE CITY, IA) In 2005 both Orange City high schools won state boys basketball championships. The MOC-Floyd Valley and Unity Christian teams united the community. Sounds like the trailer to a movie, right? Now it is.

Five years ago Orange City lived the dream of winning two titles at the same time. Now the dream of sharing that season is a big-screen reality, based on a true story.

"Two teams, same town. It's huge," says Jake Solsma, Winning Favor actor and MOC-Floyd Valley junior.
It's a story that lives on in the hearts of everyone in Orange City.
"I was in middle school and everyone just talked, talked, talked about 2005 state basketball team. Did you go to the game? did you go to the game? yeah," remembers Chris Vander Zwaag, Winning Favor actor, MOC-Floyd Valley senior and current basketball player.

"After they won, I didn't really realize how big of a thing the state championship was," says Solsma.

But team mom and now movie producer Anita Bomgaars did. And two years later casting began for a screenplay based on the 2005 championship season.

"You worried a lot about what you would sound like on the screen, what you would look like," says Vander Zwaag.

"The movies that you see. Now you're up there on that screen," says Solsma.

Using almost all local talent, OC Basketball Production made the ultra-low budget film on location.

"Either you have lots of money and you make this happen in several months or you do it like we did and it's a labor of love," says Anita Bomgaars, Winning Favor co-producer and mother of 2005 championship player.

"It was exciting but it was exhausting," says Donna Durham, Winning Favor co-producer.

The story goes beyond the court, the triumph, the trophy and into the every day lives of the boys.

"There is part of being a team and having a mission statement and having a goal and a dream to achieve," says Durham.

"It's in our mission statement - we strive to be state champions every day. We practice like state champions, we play like state champions. We go to school like state champions," says Vander Zwaag.

Mixing the movies with reality to create Winning Favor, an Orange City original.
"So we have incorporated a lot of reality into this film and it's just their story. There's no story like it in sports," says Bomgaars.

Now that story is on the big screen and the marquee for all to see.

Winning Favor premieres Friday night at the Holland Plaza Theater in Orange City. It will run for two weeks there and then come to the Promenade Theater in Sioux City. It stars Days of our Lives actor Matt Ashford.
