Why should you get involved?
Students taking a Project Lead the Way course through the Sioux City Community School District participate in a program that allows them to explore a major career path and prepare them to further their education at a two or four year college or university.
By getting involved in the student Internship program, you could help the students determine if this career path is of interest to them. Allowing the students to work on a project as part of engineering team, you will be giving the students real life exposure to what they can expect when they enter the workforce after graduating from an institution of higher education. The students will also be given the chance to see the relevance between what they are learning in school and how it applies to a variety of careers.
Participating in the Student Internship Program will give a variety of students exposure to what your company can offer after they have finished their degree and provide them an incentive to stay in the Sioux City area after graduating from college.
What you can gain from getting involved
By choosing to participate in the Student Internship Program, you can expect to have hard-working, self-motivated students to work on either a project or do research for your company. Each of these students will have taken a Project Lead The Way course the previous school year. By hiring a student intern, the company will have the chance to have capable engineering students to work on a project or do research that has been on the "back-burner" due to other projects.
What you can expect from the students
The students that will participate in the program will be recommended by the Engineering teachers. They will be hard-working, and talented self-starters. The students will be expected to do the work with supervision provided by the district and/or company. When students are working, they will act in a professional manner and give the project their full attention. Students will receive a variety of benefits from doing a student internship. They will receive high school credit, get great experience for a resume, and learn more about what it takes to be an engineer.
What you can expect from the District
The district will oversee the student interns and do the paperwork needed for the students to get high school credit for the internship. We will recommend students that will work hard and act in a professional manner. The district will expect the company to assist in determining how well the students' performed during the internship.
By working together, we can provide students with the opportunity to learn more about engineering while gaining valuable experience in the work force.
