Dairy Barn Burns Down Near Wynot, NE

(WYNOT, NE) A Nebraska farm family is picking up the pieces after devastating fire that has all but destroyed their business.

More than a day later the fire was still smoldering.

"My husband came up to the house, and he got me out of bed and told me the barn was burning down, and he had called 9-1-1," says Sherry Pick.

Early Wednesday morning Terry and Sherry Pick's dairy barn burst into flames. Damage is estimated at well over $100,000, and the building is a complete loss.

"You don't really know what to do, you're at the mercy of your insurance company, you're at the mercy of friends to help you, and you can't rely on them indefinitely," says Pick.

One calf was lost in the blaze, along with nearly 5,000 pounds of milk, but community support is already pouring in; most of the dairy cows have been taken to a neighbor's farm.

"People came with their trailers yesterday to help move all the cows to Roger Laney's, and I can't thank them enough," says Pick.

The cause of the fire is believed to be electrical, the Picks hope to build a new dairy barn in the spring.
