Culver Announces Immediate Ten Percent Budget Cuts

Iowa Governor Chet Culver announces a state-wide ten percent budget cut. The governor broke the news in a press conference Thursday afternoon. As we first reported Wednesday night, lower state tax revenues created a $414 million shortfall, prompting the broad cuts.

The ten percent chop amounts to $600 million as the state works to get ahead of the problem. Culver refuses to raise taxes to bridge the gap and said the cuts will be simple, but painful.

Culver said the budget changes will be immediate in every area of the state budget.
